MSG‘s not a bad thing, Cinnamon Sugar Muffins, 70’s and 80’s Nostalgia, Sears and Robuck Sold Kit Homes Back in the Day. What?!
Hello Monday and Welcome September!
I so love the art illustration today.
For whatever reason, the colors of the woman’s headdress makes me think of Lady September ushering in fall for us all.
I totally enjoyed collecting these great – little – big – somethings to share today!
BEGINNING WITH:
LEMON IN THE DISHWASHER
Why not? Totally makes sense to me.
24 CLEVER WAYS TO USE ORDINARY COFFEE FILTERS
Author states she accidentally bought a whole bunch of coffee filters – wrong size – and decided to explore and purpose them beyond just filtering coffee.
Brilliant — one and all.
My 3 favorite take aways are:
#1
As a Little Cap Cover Preventing Splatters in the Microwave
#8
Bouquet Garni
#20
Cleaning Electronics
I’m so gonna go purposely buy a bunch of coffee filters and check all these tips-and-tricks around my home.
MSG
I had no idea that it’s actually not a bad “guy” additive after all – like I (we) were schooled for years and years and years.
Basically we were told: MSG = BAD.
Turns out, NOPE, not based on this write-up piece from GNEISS SPICE company.
MSG is actually a natural “good guy” additive which enhances so many dishes.
Shame on those who tried to push a negative dialogue all these years.
Additionally, I happen to be a huge fan of **GNEISS SPICE ** company and have ordered spices and hard to find herbs over the years.
The company is classy, top notch and – today – reading about their take on MSG has my full trust/attention.

70s High School Parking Lot
Yeah, I was in high school in the late 70s and this picture pretty much sums up the cars in the parking lot.
We were a generation of free spirits and the only kinda cars we knew were pretty much ALL cool!
Even the VW Bugs and Pacer Hatchbacks had a place in the parking lot among the muscle cars! The little cars who could and did – provide joyful transportation from home to school – to lunch hour filled with pals on path to a local drive-thru cheap little eatery – to a bunch of friends piling in and driving “The Point” on Friday nights in downtown Billings (i.e. a couple blocks path and we’d all just go ’round and ’round – waving and laughing, honking horns to classmates in their cars.) Great memories!
We, my sisters and I, (were allowed to drive one of our mom’s cars) which was a tangerine orange Cutlass Supreme with a white top, white interior, 2 door and a V-8 engine.
She was a beauty and we felt super cool driving it!
Thinking back — we should have dubbed her, “Tangerine Dream.”

Not an Iphone in sight.
That’s right! Not an Iphone in sight. Imagine?
Ahhhh – those days were the very finest.

Experiencing the Joy of Shopping for Music at a Cool Record Store
I soooo remember the record stores! Could get lost for hours seeking and studying albums — just like a bookstore.

And that Push Forward Carpet Thing —
Its Name Escapes Me –
Anyone remember?
We struggle hand pushed that bad boy across the carpet like five or six times to pick up a few crumbs or 12.
As I recall – didn’t work all that well.
Hence, not recalling its name.
Picture jogs my memory, but no memory of its name or any stellar performance.
We should’ve just broke out the vacuum, plugged it in — get going with the get down to cleaning up stuff on the floor business – one and done! Ha

This is How I’ll Always Remember Pizza Huts
And any new business(es) that go into/renovates an abandoned Old School Pizza Hut Building …
I’m always like – That was a Pizza Hut! – Same goes for Taco Bells!
You know — iconic style.
Embedded in our memories!
((BTW Pizza Hut is still my favorite pizza of choice! — Italian Sausage and Green Pepper/Thin Crust — Forever!))

And, yes, I can drive a “stick” or “manual”
Whatever choice of description is — same thing.
From where I come from — we always referred to it as a stick shift.
And I taught my son, Hunter, how-to when he first got his driver’s license.
WHOA!
Many white knuckle rides – me sitting in the passenger seat and instructing – pump the clutch, shift, etc …
There was a lot of closing my eyes and hoping for the best. Hahaha
Happy to report that Hunter can jump in a stick shift vehicle – should need be – and drive it really well!
However, I did not learn how to do the 3 on the tree thing – that little “shifter” deal just behind the steering wheel that looked like a turn indicator but wasn’t. Hat Tip to those who learned that 3 on the tree shifting art!
Plus, hat tip to those of us who can drive a “stick” or “manual.”
SEARS AND ROEBUCK CATALOG
Selling Kit or Catalog homes?
Quite interesting!
This home was built in the early 70s. Our elderly neighbor, Harold, whom we loved a lot told us that this particular home (ours) was from a Sears and Roebuck catalog. A kit home, per say.
We were like, “uhhhh, what?”
After reading this fascinating little piece – realized that Harold was mistaken.
Because Sears stopped selling said Catalog or Kit homes in the mid-nineteen 40s.
I’m actually relieved. Wasn’t in love with the possibility/fact that this home was a kit home.
No doubt there are old-school-catalog-kit-home-beauties out there and they’re super cool.
Just didn’t want it to be this home.

UNSTUFFED CABBAGE CASSEROLE
I actually love cabbage rolls – not all the time – maybe once or twice a year.
Truth be known, I’ve never made the cabbage roll-and-roll dish. Too much time and patience involved for something that I’m not in love with -however this casserole version — is an easy awesome idea/recipe.
ONE POT CREAMY TOMATO BEEF PASTA
What’s not to love?
Especially the part where it’s a one pot dinner make AND the pasta goes in dry and cooks in the sauce.
W*O*W!
Hello!
Glad to meet ya, One Pot Tomato Beef Pasta.
CINNAMON SUGAR MUFFINS
Mix, pour into prepared muffin tins, bake, pull out of the oven, release from muffin tins.
Let cool a bit and then dunk muffins in melted butter and roll around in fabulous cinnamon sugar.
Like a fall donut – but better!

BEST CRESCENT ROLL APPLE DUMPLING RECIPE
Totally reads like a can’t-wait-to-make recipe to me.
I think the addition of lemon-lime soda pretty much has my curiosity on full throttle.
That, and it’s incredibly easy to assemble using
the Crescent Rolls in a pop it on the counter “can”!

ROCKET SCIENCE
And so the story goes —
Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windscreens of airliners and military jets all traveling at maximum velocity.
The idea – to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains.
Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to American engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer’s back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow.
The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.
Rolls Royce responded with a one-line memo: Defrost the chicken.

WISHING YOU A GRAND FIRST WEEK
IN SEPTEMBER 2024!
CATCH YA WEDNESDAY
SAME TIME
SAME PLACE
Monday morning. Daymaker AND a Holiday! Does it get any better???
I’ve long been a fan of coffee filters and use them for many of the ways suggested. My favorite NEW use is for tacos! How perfect for keeping the taco intact and controlling the drips!
Cinnamon sugar muffins – perfect with coffee the upcoming cooler fall and winter days. . .
I have long been fascinated by Sears Roebuck kit houses, probably because I like their retro style. Haven’t seen one in person so not sure how resident-friendly they are but the concept is interesting.
Will surely try the one pot creamy beef pasta. Any meal prepared in ONE POT is a favorite of mine.
Thanks for a wonderful start to the week!
Interesting DAYMAKER that you should talk about ordering a house from Sears Roebuck catalog.
My great grandma, Nancy Herndon, had one. She was born in 1865 and lived in good health up until 3-4 days before her death at nearly 100.
She was very loving and a very hard worker AND could build most anything plus could sew beautifully for all those in her household on her treadle sewing machine!
Now back to her Sears and Roebuck home. It was two-story and possibly all of them were two-story because they all looked alike in her neighborhood!
She never had running water but had a pump on her back porch.
I can still see her as a little girl watching her pump water into a small bucket and into the kitchen she would go and pour the water into a big pan to heat for washing dishes.
Another great post to get our week going! Sure do miss Robin Williams he was brilliant in comedy❤️ It was called the carpet sweeper old school before the vacuum. The good old days of cruising in our cars great times now young kids don’t even want to get their drivers license they don’t understand the kind of freedom it gives you it seems so strange to me.
