Daymaker Readable Art is chiefly my brainchild. I dreamt it. Breathed life into it. And nurtured its unique personality.
As the Proverb goes, It takes a village to raise a child. So is true with Daymaker Readable Art. I have assembled a talented team of highly skilled people who design, write, draft, craft and curate all things interesting.
As individuals, we care deeply about our work and love what we do. We work from the heart and laugh a lot. We’re artists, collectors of dazzling words and graphics and art. We carry notebooks and cameras, we listen, collaborate with others and aim to create an experience with every issue.

I AM THE FASHION | STYLE | LIVING SPACE CONTRIBUTING EDITOR FOR DAYMAKER READABLE ART.
Cheryl and I go back 15 years when she first booked an appointment with me to get her hair styled. By the end of the first Session, it felt as though we’d known each other forever. Instant click sort-of-thing. Cheryl’s always complimented / remarked on my style – clothing pieces + shoes + jewelry + accessories. She asked me if I would be interested in being the Fashion + Style + Living Space Contributing Editor and share my ideas and tips and tricks that, frankly, have always come natural to me with Daymaker Readers.
Yes, I will, was my response.
A little fun fact about me is that I’m very budget conscious so my thoughts, tips, tricks, suggestions are super affordable. And I’m excited to share them with you!
I’ll be popping in with columns frequently on the 5 for FRIDAY episodes so keep an eye out for me.

Maybe you could call me a sit-down comedian,” Leigh Rubin muses, “Whatever you call it, I’m just gratified I have the opportunity to make other people laugh.”
With his cartoon panel Rubes in hundreds of newspapers across the country and gracing millions of greeting cards, mugs and T-shirts, Rubin has plenty of opportunities. Walk into almost any gift shop, and you’ll probably see a bevy of Rubes cards. And, ironically, the inspiration to create a new cartoon panel hit Rubin while he was surrounded by just such a collection of greeting cards.
“It was 1978, and I was walking through the card section of a pharmacy,” Rubin said. “I just stopped in my tracks, looked at the cards and thought: ‘Wait a minute, I can do that.”‘
And so he did. Rubin took his first steps on the path to cartoon success by creating a publishing company and distributing his own greeting cards. Rubes Publications, established in 1979, and also publishing the popular Notable Quotes in 1981.
Rubes, in the form that cartoon aficionados now know it, began appearing in newspapers in 1984. The first paperback collection of Rubes was published in late 1988, by G.P. Putnam & Sons. His most series of books include The Wild Life of Dogs, The Wild Life of Pets, The Wild Life of Cows and The Wild Life of Farm Animals.
Originally self-syndicated, Rubes is now distributed by Creators Syndicate to more than 400 newspapers worldwide. As one of the most popular single-panel cartoons, Rubes is a regular feature in SkyWest’s United Express and Delta Connections magazines, and appears in such major daily metropolitan papers as the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, the Winnipeg Free Press, The Washington Times, the Houston Chronicle, The Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Daily News.
Rubin is married and has three sons.

Dave Coverly admits there is no overriding theme, no tidy little philosophy that precisely describes what Speed Bump is about. “Basically,” he says, “if life were a movie, these would be the outtakes.”
These “outtakes” now appear in over 400 newspapers and websites, including the Washington Post, Toronto Globe & Mail, Detroit Free Press, Chicago Tribune, Indianapolis Star, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Cincinnati Enquirer, New Orleans Times-Picayune, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Vancouver Sun, Baltimore Sun, and Arizona Republic. In 2000, the first Speed Bump book was published,
“Speed Bump: A Collection of Cartoon Skidmarks” (Andrews McMeel). More recent books include “Speed Bump: Cartoons for Idea People” (2004, ECW Press), which was named Humor Book of the Year in independent publishing by Foreword Magazine, and “Just One %$#@ Speed Bump After Another” (2005, ECW Press), which was an Honorable Mention in the Independent Publisher Book Awards.
Coverly grew up in Plainwell, Mich., and began cartooning seriously in 1986 as an undergraduate student at Eastern Michigan University, where he penned a comic panel called “Freen” for the Eastern Echo. He also studied in England during this time, and returned to EMU to receive his bachelor’s degree in both philosophy and imaginative writing in 1987. He continued his cartooning in graduate school at Indiana University, where his panel in the Indiana Daily Student won numerous national awards. He was graduated from IU with a master’s in creative writing in 1992.
While taking a year off from graduate school, Coverly was an art director for a public relations firm and an editorial cartoonist for the Battle Creek Enquirer. In 1990, he returned to Indiana and became the editorial cartoonist for The Herald-Times in Bloomington. His cartoons became regularly reprinted in such publications as Esquire, Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times and USA Today. In 1994, Creators Syndicate picked up his untitled cartoon panel, helped choose the name Speed Bump, and a year later it was running in nearly 100 papers. Coverly left The Herald-Times in 1995 to concentrate on his syndicated work
In 1995, and again in 2003, Speed Bump was given the Best Newspaper Panel award by the National Cartoonists Society, an honor for which it was also nominated again in 1997, 2001 and 2002. In 1998, the same organization gave him another award for Best Greeting Cards, which were nominated again in 1999. In 2009, Coverly was given the prestigious Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year, the highest honor awarded by The National Cartoonists Society. More information on the award and its past winners may be found at www.reuben.org.
In addition to his syndicated work, Coverly’s cartoons have been published in The New Yorker, and his cartoons are now regularly featured in Parade Magazine, the most widely read magazine in the world with a circulation of 73 million. He also donates cartoons and artwork to both of PETA’s magazines, Animal Times and Grrr! For Kids. Over the years, his work has been published in hundreds of school textbooks, magazines, newsletters and a variety of merchandise, including beer labels for Bell’s Brewery, based in Kalamazoo, Mich. His art has been exhibited in Kilkenny Castle in Ireland, and original pieces also hang in the offices of luminaries such as Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper.
2009 saw the release of Coverly’s first major children’s book, “Sue McDonald Had a Book,” with author Jim Tobin, and published by Henry Holt, Inc.
Coverly works out of an attic studio in Ann Arbor, Mich. He is married to Chris, and they have two daughters, Alayna and Simone.

Once upon a time in November 2017, a free, small paper was born in two Texas sister towns. Its name, DAYMAKER WEEKLY READER.
It was a hip, happy-vibe publication: humorous and heartfelt stories, trippy trivia, fascinating facts, extraordinary café recipes from the Hippie Cowboy, eclectic art and ideas all crafted and presented in a once-a-week read.
“Love, love, love your Reader!”
“I laughed out loud at ‘Grown-Up Pains’. Super funny! The issue was first rate as usual!”
“Very uplifting columns and quotes. Thank you!”
“My husband passed away a couple of months ago. I just read your Daymaker. It brought me the first laugh I’ve had since his passing. Thank you.”
“Hi, I was driving through your town after visiting family. I saw your DAYMAKER and I am hooked. Good Job! …”
“Love, love, love your Reader!”
The number of diverse and loyal readers who told us they either saved or passed along every issue BLEW. US. AWAY.
We were super excited. People were in love with what we were creating. Hello, cool vision affirmation!
A savvy friend said, “Girl, hard copy is so yesterday. You’re making something really great. Why not turn it into a Blog?”
Digital = Color. Room for more art and graphics. Links to superb content we find. And BONUS – not once a week, but three times a week. We high-fived and got to work.
DAYMAKER WEEKLY READER evolved.
And so has its name – DAYMAKER READABLE ART.
We’re so delighted that you’re here!
Let’s keep in touch! Subscribe and receive new issues hot off the press (so to speak) delivered to your inbox!
HAPPY TRAILS!
